Take action to save Rice's whales

There are only about 50 Rice's whales left alive in the world today. Threatened by vessel strikes and habitat degradation, Rice's whales are one of the most endangered marine mammals.

With such a small population, the protection of every remaining whale is critical to the species' survival.

The Biden administration is taking steps to protect these incredible whales from speeding vessels and offshore drilling, but there's a push in Congress to sacrifice these rare whales.

I urge you to oppose efforts to roll back protections for the Rice's whale. With only about 50 of them left alive in the entire world, the entire species is dangerously close to extinction.

Vessel speed restrictions, and restricting oil and gas drilling in their habitat, are critical to keep these whales alive.

One particularly dangerous bill on the table is HR 5239 -- The Gulf of Mexico Commerce Protection Act. If passed, this legislation would threaten Rice's whales by blocking vessel speed restrictions in areas of the Gulf of Mexico where these endangered whales live.

Rice's whales are one of the most endangered marine mammals in the world. It's estimated that only 51 remain in the Gulf of Mexico. Protecting each of these remaining whales is critical to the species' survival -- and allowing for vessel slowdown zones could make the difference.

Vessel strikes are a leading threat to Rice's whale. Boat collisions can and have killed Rice's whales. By opposing HR 5239, you can help ensure that this doesn't happen again.
