Take action to help save orcas from starvation

There are four dams along the Lower Snake River that pose a problem for Chinook salmon.

To remove them, we'll need serious action -- and not just in the states where these dams reside. It requires an act of Congress.

That's why we're calling on leaders in Washington state and Washington, D.C., to support the action needed to protect the Southern Resident orcas.

If we act quickly, we can convince our leaders to act this year in Congress to pass legislation that would help the Chinook -- and the orcas -- recover.

Until July 11, Washington's state leaders and leaders in Congress will be accepting comments on a plan to restore the salmon populations in Puget Sound. Send them the message that orcas need our help.

The Southern Resident orcas in the waters off the coasts of Washington, Oregon and California are starving because their primary food source -- Chinook salmon -- are critically endangered. The time is now to enact the solutions necessary to stop salmon and orca extinction.

Breaching four dams on the lower Snake River is the single biggest opportunity we have to restore salmon populations that the Southern Resident orcas and Northwestern communities rely on. We can choose to power our communities with renewable energy, but salmon and orcas don't have a choice.

We can stop extinction and lead the largest salmon restoration in history, but only if you move swiftly and boldly. Please deliver your plan in time for Congress to pass any necessary legislation and appropriations needed to implement it.

I urge you to take action quickly, and to utilize the best available science from your report, which confirms lower Snake River dam removal as our best chance to avoid salmon extinction.
