Reject Trump's Outrageous Offshore Drilling Proposal

Earlier this year, the Trump administration proposed opening up roughly 92 percent of U.S. waters off our coasts to dangerous offshore oil and gas drilling.

We shouldn't industrialize our coasts for the sake of more dirty fossil fuels that contribute to climate change. These waters are home to whales, sea turtles, polar bears and other wildlife at risk of extinction and they are an important part of nature and our country's natural heritage.

Urge your U.S. representative and senators to oppose the Trump administration's massive proposed expansion of oil and gas drilling in the waters off our coasts.

I strongly urge you to oppose the Trump administration's proposal to open roughly 92 percent of U.S. waters to dangerous offshore oil and gas drilling -- even in areas where oil companies have expressed zero interest.

The proposal would open previously-protected federal waters along the East Coast from Maine to Florida, the Gulf Coast, the Pacific Coastline and Alaska.

Expanded drilling in our coastal waters risks an oil disaster on the order of the Deep Water Horizon or Exxon Valdez. It would mar unspoiled ocean views with ugly drilling platforms. And it threatens whales, sea turtles and polar bears.

Just exploring for new oil and gas deposits can have devastating consequences for marine ecosystems. The president's administration has already approved deafening seismic blasting as part of its efforts to expand drilling off U.S. coasts -- an approach that could lead to the death of tens of thousands of dolphins, whales, sea turtles and other animals, according to the government's own studies.

Even worse, oil and gas extracted from the Outer Continental Shelf will release carbon emissions that fuel destructive climate change that that is already contributing to extreme weather events, the frequency and severity of wildfires, and the loss of wildlife and biodiversity.

The worsening effects of global climate change demand a different approach to energy. We owe it to future generations to transition away from fossil fuels that contribute to climate change and protect the health our oceans and ocean wildlife.

The Trump administration's proposal to industrialize our coastal waters for offshore drilling is the wrong approach to meet America's energy needs. I urge you to do everything you can to stop the administration's offshore drilling plans and protect our coasts, the wildlife we love, and our climate from the threat of risky offshore drilling.
