Stop Seismic Blasts #SaveTheWhales

Imagine for a moment if your home was assaulted with an insanely loud blast, louder than 10 jet engines, every 10 seconds. All day, all night, for days to months on end. This is actually a heartbreaking reality for whales and other marine life as Big Oil does its dirty business off our pristine coasts using seismic air blasts to search for oil and gas deposits beneath the seafloor.

Seismic testing for oil creates what biologists call an "acoustic smog" that drowns out whale chatter and interferes with the way marine mammals perceive the world. Over time, animals that rely on sonar and listening to 'see' can go blind and can't function properly. For animals like whales and dolphins that use sound to eat, hunt, find mates, navigate and communicate with their young families, these sonic booms could be a death sentence.

The Interior Department announced it is planning on moving forward with seismic surveys in the Atlantic Ocean following President Donald Trump’s executive order to expand offshore drilling in protected areas in the Arctic and Atlantic oceans.

The noise of these blasts is so loud that it can be heard up to 2,500 miles from the source – to put in perspective, that is about the distance from Los Angeles, CA, to Washington, DC! And it’s not just sealife upset about this; more than 120 East Coast municipalities formally oppose offshore drilling and/or seismic airgun blasting. Sign to tell the Department of Interior to press the mute button on seismic blasts before it’s too late!
