Take action to help save the last 15 wild red wolves

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is conducting a 5-year review of the red wolf's conservation status. The agency will decide whether the wolves keep the same level of protection they currently enjoy, lose some amount of protection -- or, in the worst possible case, lose their endangered status entirely.

The agency is accepting comments from the public until July 12. Take action today to help save the last few wild red wolves.

Your Letter:

I strongly urge you to maintain the strongest possible level of endangered protection for the last remaining wild red wolves. This critically endangered population needs all the help it can get to survive, especially in light of the many threats these animals face in their habitat.

Vehicle strikes, hybridization with coyotes and poaching are urgent and ongoing threats that, if left unchecked, could quickly lead to the extinction of the red wolf in the wild. Continued management and protection is vital if these wolves are going to be able to reestablish a growing, thriving population in their natural habitat.

A study entitled "Majority positive attitudes cannot protect red wolves (Canis rufus) from a minority willing to kill illegally," published in the October 2021 edition of Biological Conservation, revealed that a small portion of surveyed respondents -- residents of red wolf habitat -- would kill any wolf they encountered. Maintaining stringent protective measures for wolves is the only way to protect them from being decimated by poaching.
