One out of every 5 Wisconsin wolves were killed in just 60 hours this February. It was the first wolf hunt that was a direct result of the Trump administration erasing Endangered Species Act protections for wolves -- but it won't be the last.

Wisconsin is already planning another hunt for this November -- and this time, the wolf hunt could last for four months. It isn't just Wisconsin wolves that are in states' crosshairs: Earlier this year, Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte personally trapped and shot a wolf illegally -- at the same time that the Montana Legislature is poised to allow unlimited hunting of wolves.

With more wolf hunts coming down the pike, we don't have any time to lose. The clock is ticking for gray wolves. President Biden has initiated a review of wolves' endangered species status -- but Interior Department staff immediately responded by defending the decision not to protect them. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland,

I'm writing to urge you to restore Endangered Species Act protections for gray wolves across the Lower 48 states.

Wisconsin's decision to kill 1 in every 5 gray wolves in just 60 hours this February clearly highlights the need for federal protections -- and they're already planning a four-month wolf hunt for later this year.

It isn't just Wisconsin wolves that are in states' crosshairs: Recent legislation in Montana and Idaho will be devastating for wolves, and they can already be hunted without limit in most of Wyoming. Unfortunately, we've known for years that when wolves don't have federal protections, they're in grave danger. Gray wolves around the Great Lakes lost critical protections in 2011, and nearly 1,500 were killed before a federal court had to step in to stop the hunt.

Wolves are a keystone species important to a healthy ecosystem, and we know how to coexist with them -- but the first step is restoring their Endangered Species Act protections before we lose more of these magnificent animals to senseless slaughter.
