Urge Your Governor to Oppose Offshore Drilling

Climate change and other human-made threats are already accelerating the loss of entire species.

Unfortunately, that isn't stopping the Trump administration from barreling ahead with plans to open 90 percent of federal waters to dangerous offshore drilling.

Help protect imperiled polar bears, sea turtles, whales and other wildlife. Urge your state's governor to do everything in their power to stop the administration's massive proposed expansion of offshore drilling in federal waters.

Subject: Oppose more offshore drilling in federal waters

Your Letter:

As a constituent, I strongly urge you to do everything in your power to stop the Trump administration's massive proposed expansion of offshore drilling in federal waters off the coast of Alaska and America's Atlantic and Pacific coasts.

Offshore oil and gas drilling furthers our dependence on the fossil fuels that contribute to climate change, but spills, leaks, and even day-to-day operations can also be incredibly harmful to wildlife.

In an oil spill, polar bear fur loses its insulating qualities, causing them to freeze and drown. If they swallow oil, sea turtles will die. And seismic air blasts used to test for oil deposits can deafen and even kill animals like dolphins and whales who rely on their hearing to survive.

This is a pivotal moment for protecting polar bears, sea turtles, whales and other wildlife, but it is also a key time to address climate change by reducing carbon emissions from fossil fuels. In fact, we may have a little as 12 years to completely transition from fossil fuels that worsen climate change, according to the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

For all these reasons -- and the overall importance of healthy oceans to our environment -- if I encourage you to:

* Make clear your administration's opposition to expanding offshore drilling in federal waters;

* Urge your state's congressional delegation to oppose the offshore plan with action in the US Congress; and

* Investigate further legal and executive action that our state can take to stop the Trump administration from industrializing our coasts.

Thank you for taking the time to consider my message. I hope you will do all you can to keep the Trump administration from sacrificing our oceans -- and the spectacular marine wildlife they support -- to maintain our addiction to fossil fuels.
