Say No To Grand Canyon Uranium Mining

The Trump administration has just announced plans to mine more uranium -- and they want to do it right in the Grand Canyon watershed.

Uranium mining is incredibly destructive, leaving a legacy of toxic waste, polluted waterways and displaced communities, all for the sake of incredibly dangerous nuclear weapons and power. And downstream from the proposed mining, the Colorado River supplies drinking water to tens of millions of people.

The Grand Canyon is one of our most iconic and special places. It's a natural wonder that took millions of years to form, and is beyond breathtaking. It's exactly the kind of place that we have a responsibility to preserve for future generations.

The US Forest Service recently proposed a reintroduction of uranium mining in the Grand Canyon's watershed. But uranium mining is incredibly destructive, leaving a legacy of toxic waste, polluted waterways and displaced communities. Downstream from the proposed mining, the Colorado River supplies drinking water to tens of millions of people.

There are already hundreds of abandoned uranium mines around the Grand Canyon that have never been cleaned up. Surrounding communities, including the Navajo Nation, have long suffered from cancer and birth defects as a result. The pollution is so widespread, most babies in one study are born with uranium already in their bodies.

It's no mistake that the Grand Canyon has been a national park for almost 100 years. From the well-known vistas of the South Rim to the sparser North Rim and Kaibab Forest, the Grand Canyon is a nationally recognized symbol of the majesty of nature.

I urge you to say no to uranium mining in the Grand Canyon's watershed.
