North Atlantic right whales are among the thousands of marine animals that are at risk from seismic blasting -- the process of using immensely loud airguns to test for offshore drilling sites.

The SECURE American Energy Act, currently in the House of Representatives, would expand seismic blasting.

North Atlantic right whales are already at risk -- this legislation would make their survival significantly less likely.

Dear Representative,

The SECURE American Energy Act up for vote in the House would increase seismic blasting, putting the already-endangered North Atlantic right whales at risk.

Seismic airguns, which are the most common methods used for seismic testing, register at 220 - 250 decibels. That's louder than the Saturn V rocket during launch -- the rocket that sent people to the moon, and also produced one of the loudest sounds ever recorded, capable of melting concrete and setting grass on fire by sound alone.

The sound from these airguns is one of the major threats to North Atlantic right whales -- the most at-risk large whale species.

The new bill, called the SECURE American Energy Act, strike important provisions of the Marine Mammal Protection Act, which would allow for more seismic blasting in our oceans -- further risking endangered marine animals, like the North Atlantic right whales, chances of survival.

As few as 458 North Atlantic right whale are left on the entire planet. This bill would further the threats against the last remaining of this precious species.

For these reasons, I strongly urge you to vote no on the SECURE American Energy Act (H.R. 4239).
